Walking in the Bay of Islands.

There are just so many walking tracks around us here at 88 Lodge however it’s always a real pleasure to ‘find’ one we have not ‘done’ before.

Our latest ‘find’ is the trail from The Waitangi Treaty Grounds to Haruru Falls.

Basically following the Waitangi River the clear and well-maintained path leads you through native woodland offering spectacular views across the inlet, then the mangrove swamps and then Haruru Falls itself.

The path drops down from the valley side to cross the river.  Stand on the bridge for clear views of Flounder skimming across the mud banks beneath you.  Here a boardwalk starts and you enter the mangroves to the sounds of the Snapping Shrimps.   It is amazing how just a few steps across a bridge can change your surroundings so dramatically.

After the mangrove boardwalk it’s back into native bush and on to Haruru Falls.  Not as high as the spectacular Rainbow Falls (which are just down the road from us here at 88 Lodge), but broad and impressive in all states of river flow.

Here you will need transport back to Waitangi or reverse your steps and enjoy the walk all the way back.

It's not many who receive ‘HALL OF FAME’ status. This makes us a B&B not to be missed
