Waitangi – new events to delight our visitors

Waitangi is the birthplace of New Zealand.  It was here that the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British Crown and the Maori Chiefs.

The Treaty grounds are magnificent, encompassing the Treaty House, Marae (carved meeting house), Waka (world’s largest cermonial war canoe), Guided tour, Maori show and Parade Ground,  The Gardens and panoramic views across the Bay of Islands are stunning.  What more could you want?

Well the Waitangi Trust has now added a museum tracking the history of those events in the 19th century.  So good it has won top tourist awards and is now an absolute must see for visitors to the area.  There is also an excellent café.  All of this is available within a single day pass.

Furthermore, there is now a ‘Hāngi and Concert’ evening. A hungi is a traditional Maori meal cooked underground.  (Here is has to be said that Health and Safety, and Occupational Health rules have taken over and the normally expected hygiene conditions for a commercial kitchen are observed. However, to common knowledge no Maori has ever been known to suffer any ill effects from a traditional Hāngi).

Those gathered for the evening are formed into a ‘tribe’ and a ‘chief’ appointed.   Having watched the uncovering of the forthcoming feast a walk through the woods encountering the enemy tribe follows.  This is eerie and realistic and really sets everyone up for the concert which takes place in the Marae.

After the concert and time chatting with the now ‘host tribe’ the group returns to the Hungi site for a truly delicious meal.

All in all, a very different and enjoyable experience.

Presently the Hungi & Concert evenings are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays between 1st December and 30th March.  No doubt as the popularity of this event grows so will the availability.

Full details of the Waitangi attractions can be seen here.

So, that’s another reason to stay an extra day in Northland.  Spend the day enjoying the grounds followed by the evenings meal and entertainment.

88 Lodge is approximately 20 minutes’ drive from the treaty grounds and we can organise your tickets for you.

It's not many who receive ‘HALL OF FAME’ status. This makes us a B&B not to be missed
