Day Trips out from 88 Lodge.

Northland is just full of stunning, wonderful and unusual places. Over the years we have been here we have developed a selection on Day Trips for our guests to enjoy getting the broadest view of this beautiful place in God’s own country.

For us it is always a joy to get out and about to find new experiences, new views and new things to do. Just recently we have discovered a new route that makes for yet another fantastic day out.

We are calling it ‘The Eastern Loop’.

Taking the car ferry to the Russel side of the Bay our new route finds it’s way to Elliott’s Bay. Northland is blessed with some magnificent beaches, believe us when we say Elliott’s Bay does not disappoint.

Following what is known as the scenic route south from Russell the road runs along the coastline to turn inland at Helena Bay. Where you come across a most unusual café and art gallery. https://www.galleryhelenabay.co.nz/. Perched high above the bay the views from their deck allows your coffee go cold as you take them in. Stunning gardens surround the café filled with the most delightful artwork. The Gallery has a truly huge selection of paintings, sculpture, furniture and woodwork, metalwork, glasswork, textile work, ceramics, jewellery, photography, wall art and decorations imaginable. Something to suit every taste and pocket.

Moving on we soon come to The Jack Morgan Museum at Hukerenui. Essentially one man’s collection during his lifetime, artefacts relating to the local area, the railway and local Maori.

Heading back now. If there is still time in the day the Kawiti Glow worm caves make a great place to stop for a bit of a leg stretch as you walk through the caves and return via the bush track. Alternatively perhaps the Vintage steam train in Kawakawa where the tracks actually run up the middle of the high street. Train and traffic have to play nicely together here!! No stop in Kawakawa is complete without a visit to the local public toilets. A strange thing to suggest for a day trip out, but these toilets are world-renowned and not to be missed.

As usual we have developed a map for our guests to make this day out pleasant and hassle free.

It's not many who receive ‘HALL OF FAME’ status. This makes us a B&B not to be missed
