Best Visitor Experience at the NZ Tourism Awards. Waitangi.

Nearby Waitangi Treaty Grounds has been awarded the ‘Best Visitor Experience’ at this year’s NZ tourism awards.  This is a tremendous triumph for Northland and the Bay of Islands especially when you consider the competition there is throughout New Zealand.  Whilst other parts of the country have stunning visitor attractions, this year’s award goes to prove that a trip north from Auckland is a must for all tourist itineraries.

Stand on the spot where New Zealand’s foundling document – the Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi) was signed in 1840 and find out more about how this document has forged the unique land that we now call Aotearoa New Zealand.

Undoubtedly the new Museum of Waitangi is a major addition to the other attractions at the Treaty grounds.  The award is reflective of this.

But don’t forget there is also: -

The 1830’s historic Treat House,

the carved Meeting House,

the world’s largest war canoe (Ngatokimatawhaorua),

the Parade Ground and Flagstaff,

introductory film in the visitor center,

changing exhibition gallery and carving displays,

delicious food at Whare Waka Café,

all capped by breathtaking views over the Bay of Islands and walks through the grounds and gardens.

And if all this is not enough the long summer evenings in the Bay of Islands lend themselves perfectly to a twilight cultural experience.  A traditional delicious Hangi feast plus a bush walk experiencing approaches by Maori warriors complete with traditional challenge (wero) all followed by a Maori Culture Concert.

Putting all this together means a full day and evening is probably not enough time to take it all in.

Couple this with the other things to do whilst in the area and you will never allocate enough time in Northland.  Just have a quick look at our ‘Things to do’ page.

We have had guests stay 24 nights and when leaving said ‘We’ll be back for we still have to …………’
